What is clinical psychology?

Clinical psychologists are specialists trained in mental health assessment and treatment. We use a range of evidence-based treatment styles and work with you to find the best approach for your concerns and struggles. These are some of the therapy interventions I offer:

  • CBT looks at the way your thoughts, feeling, actions, and physical sensations all impact each other. Unpicking this can give us information around what is keeping you stuck, and help us plan specific steps forward.

  • CBT-ED or CBTe is the current gold standard specialist eating disorder intervention, especially for those experiencing bulimia or binge eating disorder. It looks at how thoughts, feelings and bodily sensations are impacting food behaviours, body image, and emotional processing.

  • ACT looks at what we can and can’t control in life. It helps us accept things we cannot change, and take steps towards changing what we can. ACT helps you to step back from your thoughts and look at the bigger picture in life, including your values.

  • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a therapy approach primarily aimed to assist individuals recover from traumatic experiences. It involves bilateral stimulation (eye movements/tapping) alongside recalling traumatic experiences. This aims to assist the brain in its natural healing processes, reducing emotional impacts, and helping people integrate traumatic experiences into their life’s story.

  • CPT is a trauma-focussed intervention, which looks at how ways we view past trauma or current trauma symptoms are keeping us stuck. We then work on ways to help move forward from these stuck points which are maintaining distress with current trauma symptoms.

  • This is a therapy targeting primarily traumatic experiences. Sometimes when we have been through trauma we have a tendency to want to avoid traumatic memories or reminders. However, this avoidance can make the trauma’s impact persist and even feel stronger. Prolonged exposure assists you to gradually face your experiences and fears in a safe and planned way, with you making decisions about what you will try. This helps you learn you can manage your feelings and fears and reduces trauma symptoms.
